WHAT TO DO?

PREPARATION

Tips on how to prepare for Hurricane Sandy and other tropical storms. Sandy is expected to be especially disastrous when it merges with a winter storm system, bringing powerful winds, rain, and snow.

a. Before the hurricane:

  • Know your surroundings and whether your home is in a flood prone area. Determine where you would go and how you would get there, if you were ordered to evacuate.
  • Cover your home's windows, either with permanent storm shutters or marine plywood at least 5/8 of an inch thick.

Chris Christie has ordered mandatory evacuations of the barrier islands by 4 p.m. Sunday, including the Atlantic City casinos, as Hurricane Sandy threatens the East Coast.

  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well-trimmed.
  • Secure all outdoor furniture, decorations, trash cans and anything else that could blow away. Besides, install a generator for emergencies.

b. During:

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information. Then, secure your home, close storm shutters, and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.
  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.

c. Do not:

  • Drive into low-lying areas or over roads and bridges that are already under water.
Better to prepare for a storm that misses you than not prepare for one that doesn't.

SAFETY TIPS

  • If you are traveling, find safe shelter immediately.

If you are at home or at work:
  • Only stay in a home if you have NOT been ordered to leave. Stay inside a well constructed building. In structures, such as a home, examine the building and plan in advance what you will do if winds become strong.

If winds become strong:
  • Stay away from windows and doors even if they are covered.
  • Close all interior doors. Secure and brace external doors.
  • If you are in a two-story house, go to an interior first-floor room.

The best method to prevent hurricane damage is to stay indoors. After a hurricane, inspect the place carefully for all possible dangers and start the restoration process as quickly as possible.
