PREPARATION
Tips on how to prepare for Hurricane Sandy and other tropical storms. Sandy is expected to be especially disastrous when it merges with a winter storm system, bringing powerful winds, rain, and snow.
a. Before the hurricane:
- Know your surroundings and whether your home is in a flood prone area. Determine where you would go and how you would get there, if you were ordered to evacuate.
- Cover your home's windows, either with permanent storm shutters or marine plywood at least 5/8 of an inch thick.

- Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well-trimmed.
- Secure all outdoor furniture, decorations, trash cans and anything else that could blow away. Besides, install a generator for emergencies.
b. During:
- Listen to the radio or TV for information. Then, secure your home, close storm shutters, and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
- Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.
- Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
c. Do not:
- Drive into low-lying areas or over roads and bridges that are already under water.
Better to prepare for a storm that misses you than not prepare for one that doesn't.
SAFETY TIPS
- If you are traveling, find safe shelter immediately.
If you are at home or at work:
- Only stay in a home if you have NOT been ordered to leave. Stay inside a well constructed building. In structures, such as a home, examine the building and plan in advance what you will do if winds become strong.
If winds become strong:
- Stay away from windows and doors even if they are covered.
- Close all interior doors. Secure and brace external doors.
- If you are in a two-story house, go to an interior first-floor room.
The best method to prevent hurricane damage is to stay indoors. After a hurricane, inspect the place carefully for all possible dangers and start the restoration process as quickly as possible.
